Restoration

The third exhibition at Arterial features a solo show from Canadian artist, Mark Raynes Roberts titled Restoration. This exhibition features Roberts’ personal response to Covid-19, created in a series of oil paintings, sculptures, and videos. The depiction of natural scenes evokes a deep appreciation for nature and the natural world, which has a great deal of importance for Roberts during the pandemic and the following lockdowns. Roberts writes on his website that “Nature has a reliable sanity. She has consistent rituals. The sun comes up and it sets. In the spring, flowers bloom. In the winter, the landscape sleeps under a cover of snow. No matter what happens, the grass will grow, blossoms will always bloom, leaves will always change colour, snow will always fall, tides will rise and fall. When there’s uncertainty in the world at large, nature is our one, dependable friend.”
